7 Steps to Workplace Zen

Meditation for Professionals

Are you an incurable workaholic? I understand. I’ve been there.

In these days of layoffs and foreclosures, who could afford to not be a workaholic, right? Well, let me tell you that you can afford it. The stress we face in our jobs on a daily basis eats away not only at our health but our family relationships, spirituality, and overall wellbeing and happiness! So, what do we do? Quit our jobs? No, not at all! We just have to find a way to deal with the stress we face in our jobs so it doesn’t affect us.

Let me tell you a little about myself… or you can jump down to see the 7 ways to be happier at work below. I practiced law for over five years in Florida. During those five years, I experienced the highest amounts of consistent stress I’ve ever experienced in my whole life. The stress was so much and so consistent that I basically had a migraine every other day and had back pains that an 80 year old would be expected to have (I’m 30 years old by the way…).

These pains continued during the whole time that I practiced law. Being a lawyer was nothing like I had envisioned and let me tell you it’s nothing like Law and Order or any other law show on TV. My migraines and back pains got so bad I had to seek massage therapy to function. That is where I was introduced to meditation….

Meditation basically saved my life. It has completely changed the way I see myself, other people, and life in general…and I’ve only been practicing for a few months!

I meditate for 10 minutes a day with my husband. I really enjoy meditating with him because it has brought us so much closer than ever before. We’ve always gotten along well (this is expected as we’ve only been married for 5 months!) but now, our relationship has become even closer and stronger than ever.

Meditation has given an opportunity to fight my workaholic, personality Type A, anxiety-crazed personality. I basically lived my whole life thinking that if I was not feeling anxiety and stress, I was not being efficient. I actually thrived on stress! This may sound crazy when you read it… or does it sound familiar?

It’s a shame, but it’s true. Our society advocates stress and efficiency. We’ve unfortunately related stress and efficiency to go hand in hand. And, this is completely wrong. Believe me, it IS possible to be efficient and not stress out.

7 Keys to Workplace Zen

Now on to your list of 7 keys of workplace Zen… through meditation.

  1. Meditation enables you to be in the moment. This allows you to enjoy life in general much more. Even the smallest moments are enjoyable and through meditation, you’ll be able to recognize and appreciate this.
  2. Meditate to have better relationships with your co-workers. When you meditate, you become a more compassionate person. Your hostility decreases and you begin to sense a feeling of connection with other people. This has a very good impact on your relationships at work.
  3. Meditate to have a balanced life. Believe me your family will appreciate this. Though we are programmed to constantly be focused on what else we can obtain or achieve, this is not what is most important. The relationships and time you spend with your family are what gives you life, energy, and happiness. Meditation essentially helps you have your priorities in order (the correct order…)
  4. Meditate to focus better. When you meditate, you generally focus on your breath. You also acknowledge thoughts coming in and out of your mind. These exercises help you to control your mind and attention in general. By practicing meditation, you gain an ability to focus your attention on things in a much more effective and channeled manner. In that way, you are quicker at your job and way more focused.
  5. Meditate to be more innovative. When you meditate, you give yourself the opportunity to be in the moment and focus on nothing. This ironically enough gets your brain pumping and your creative juices running at full force.
  6. Meditate and be more efficient. Believe it or not, taking time out of your day to meditate, sit, be with yourself, or whatever else you want to call it, makes you more efficient. Meditating is basically a way to recharge your batteries. The great thing is that each time you recharge your batteries, you are recharging them with more and more energy. You’d be amazed at how much you can get done in a day after you take 10 minutes out to simply breathe.
  7. Meditate and be less angry. Do you know more than your boss and make half the salary he or she makes? Is your assistant the slowest person on the planet? I’m sure there are plenty of us that will answer HECK YES to these questions.

These are situations that would be upsetting to anyone. However, through meditation, you are able to see the situation for what it is and find a way around it without affecting you on an emotional level. You basically become much less prone to emotional agitation in the face of stress. Believe this has come in handy plenty of times for me at times when I was in front of a “non-cooperative” (nice way to put it) Judge or client!

Our focus in our daily lives is constantly geared outside of ourselves and focused on accomplishments and possessions. Don’t get me wrong, I fully advocate being driven and having desires and passions in life. However, we cannot let our focus be constantly on the outside. If we do so, we rob ourselves of living a full and optimal life. We deny ourselves all the benefits that we can achieve through meditation.

Practice meditation for just 10 minutes a day and see how your efficiency and innovativeness, compassion, and relationships with your co-workers and family all improve. All it takes is 10 minutes.

Go ahead, just sit and breathe and start meditating today! If you are new to meditation, make sure to get your Free 5 Day Meditation Course to get started today!
