Meditate to Deal with The Harms of Technology

Meditation and Technology

Meditation and Technology

In the past twenty years, we have seen incredible advances in technology. Though these advances have benefited us and businesses greatly, they still have their negative effects.

With the new age of ipods, personal video games, personal DVD players, and cell phones, families do not communicate like they used to. Families don’t even communicate as much as they used to. This is really ironic since so many new cell phones are produced on a yearly basis.

Nowadays, a family road trip can involve three kids in the backseat each with their own DVD player, cell phone, ipod, or video games, mom checking emails on her blackberry, and dad speaking on the cell phone via Bluetooth. The whole family inside of one car, yet not even aware that there are others in the car with them!

The constant use and changes in technology has a very negative effect on us whether we want to admit it or not. It also affects our spirituality and beliefs as we don’t really have time to even stop and think what it is that we even believe in!

With the use of blackberries and cell phones, we never turn off the clock. We are constantly “in” the office since our clients know they can reach us at any time. This not only feeds unrealistic expectations from our clients but it also develops unrealistic expectations in ourselves by pressuring us to respond in a “timely manner.”

Separation, depression, alienation, and loneliness. Back in the day, we used to live in the same place, stay married to the same person for the rest of our life, and know and stay in touch with our neighbors for decades. These days, we generally drive long distances to take our children to school, to go to work, and of course check our voice mail and email on the way! We change careers, spouses, friends, and houses much more frequently now. This causes us to lose our sense of connection to others as we begin to see things as transient.

Meditation can help us in dealing with these harms of meditation by teaching us acceptance of outside stressors and helping us feel connected. Meditation can connect us with our personal source of enjoyment and show us compassion. Through this feeling of compassion, we learn to live our daily lives enjoying moments and being in the “flow” of things. This way, regardless of the amount of changes in our family, work, or home lives, we can still feel a universal connection to others and face external stressors with balance and equanimity.

How do you think meditation has helped you cope with all the daily life demands and stresses?

The flip-side of comforts that the technology may give us today might be seen in a few years from now, the pace of technology has been at its fastest pace in the recent years, so we should better prepare ourselves by resorting to such great ideas of meditation.

    Cheers.

  • It sure does Antonia! On a bright note though, we’ve got to use it to our advantage… especially when we have children! A good way I use technology to positively influence my family is by watching spiritual movies with them. So far, it’s worked wonders. You can read my review on the spiritual cinema circle movies (just click on the link in this sentence.)

This article reminded me of a road trip we took to Orlando earlier this year. It was as if every single member of my family was in their own little world, chatting and texting on their little cell phones. Technology definitely has its negative side!
