Meditation “How To” for Today’s Professional
Meditation How To for Today’s Professional
You work a full time schedule, get home to be with your spouse and children, wait for them to go to bed, and then continue to work at home after dinner is done. Does this sound like some days in your schedule? To some of us, this sounds all too familiar. In fact, more familiar than we would like to admit!
We live in a society that advocates and admires accomplishments, consumerism, and busyness. This focus on all of these things brings us stress and anxiety. Anxiety that is so commonplace at our jobs and in our family life that it becomes an innate part of who we are. In fact, a lot of us actually believe that in order to be efficient and productive we have to feel stress and anxiety.
I remember that when I first began to meditate, one of the first things I noticed was how much calmer and non-anxious I felt. Coming from being a practicing attorney, I was extremely familiar with feeling stress. I actually thought it was healthy and necessary to being efficient. I thought stress was the little push that people needed to be on top of their game constantly. Boy, was I wrong!
Today, I am actually more efficient than ever before. This is because I am able to focus all of my mind and energy into the task at hand. I don’t let my thoughts distract me from the project I am working on like I did in the past. This is a very, very common situation for the majority of us. The sad part is that a lot of us don’t even realize it!
Because we are all busy and I want you to meditate and make a regular practice out of it, here are a few tips to increase your mediation how to right now:
- Wear loose clothes while meditating. This is for the obvious reason of not getting cramps in your legs or stomach do to the restrictiveness of the clothing.
- Find a quiet place for meditating. The place can be indoors or outdoors but should be a place where you can be alone with your thoughts. If you meditate at work, let your secretary know not to transfer calls for the period during which you meditate to avoid distractions.
- Schedule out your meditation. Use meditation timers online to time out the duration of your meditation. In this way, you can fully focus on meditating without worrying that you will do it for too long or not long enough.
- Sit up straight on a chair or cushion. You don’t have to sit in a half or full lotus position. Regular sitting or even laying down is just as efficient. Don’t lay down if you are new to meditation though because the temptation of falling asleep is too great.
- Breathe through your nose. Inhale and exhale slowly and focus on your breath. Take deeper breaths when you are starting to get distracted by your thoughts. This will take your attention back to your breathing.
- Start to meditate for 10 minutes each day. 10 minutes a day is all you need. I can tell you that I mediate for 10 to 15 minutes a day and its had a fantastic effect on my life. No need to dedicate hours to this at all. You’ll still feel results in your life anyway.
- Be consistent. Just like when you are beginning an exercise routine, the beginning is the most difficult part. Once you do it for 21 times though, it becomes a habit. Make meditation part of your daily routine by meditating for 10 minutes each day for 21 days. You’ll notice how it becomes part of your day and you eventually begin to crave it and the peace of mind it gives you.

Hey, nice post, really well written. You should blog more about this.
Hi, Congratulations to the site owner for this marvelous work you’ve done. It has lots of useful and interesting data.
May I suggest an 8th tip:
Do not let meditation be your next addiction or “must do at all cost activity”.
Kids, spouses and your job may require immediate attention. Do not get stressed out over the fact that you cannot meditate at your normal schedule. Just let go and let things happen, you will feel more relaxed and can continue your practice at a later time or the next day.
Thanks for writing, I truly enjoyed reading your newest post. I think you should post more often, you clearly have talent for blogging!
