Meditation Course for Beginners

The practice of meditation is the activity of engaging in introspective thought or contemplation. The practice involves focusing your attention on your thoughts, looking inwards, and focusing on a purpose or an event as having already been done. Meditation does not seek to ignore or fight the thoughts coming into your mind but to move past them while accepting they are in your mind.

To Do Lists

As Americans, we are constantly on the go, marking things off our “to do” lists, and always looking to see what else we have to do, have to buy, or have to achieve. We do not normally take time out to just be, to focus on the moment, to focus on who we are and why we are here, or to just breathe! That is just the way we are programmed because that is the way our society works. I mean think about it, as soon as you meet someone after them asking you your name, the next question is: “So, what do you do?” Talk about a society that places an emphasis on what we do huh? It’s to the point that a huge percentage of us feels that their identity is intrinsically dependent on their profession; on what they do.

Meditation Techniques

There are a multitude of meditation techniques available. These techniques range from yoga meditation to lovingkindness meditation. Each meditation technique focuses on a specific thing and has a specific goal. Though there are many different meditation techniques, they all fall into one of two categories: meditation for focus or meditation for enlightenment. Meditation for focus is practiced by focusing the attention on the breath. Its goal is to learn to live and be concerned with the present moment. Meditation for enlightenment is practiced by focusing on your thoughts, moving past them, and being open to receive awareness. This type of meditation has a goal of receiving enlightenment of what true reality is. It is more complicated than focus types of meditation.

Benefits of Meditation

The benefits you can gain from regular meditation are incredible. You will feel a difference not only mentally but physically. Meditation can improve your outlook on life and at the same time improve your communication skills, your temperament, the way you handle stressful situations, and your focus at work or school. Physically, it has been shown to lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, aid in the prevention of panic attacks, ADD syndrome, and depression. There are many medical studies that have been done on the effects of meditation on patients suffering from mental and physical disorders. Today, many medical physicians incorporate meditation into their treatments. This speaks volumes about the importance and power of meditation and the most recent acceptance of it in the United States.
