3 Meditation Videos on Posture

Because posture is such an essential element to successful meditation, I have included several videos showing the exact way in which you should sit. This way you will see first hand what your posture should look like.

The main reason why posture is so important for successful meditation, especially when you are first learning how to meditate is to prevent injury and to decrease distraction.

Because the goal is to progressively increase the amount of time that you sit in meditation, learning the correct meditation posture will be of ultimate importance.

Meditation is a great way to calm your nerves, bring more peace to your daily life, and battle anxiety and stress.

Sitting in the correct posture is not only comfortable, but it also:

  1. Decreases potential for injury;
  2. Helps blood flow through your body;
  3. Keeps you from falling asleep; and
  4. Prevents cramps in legs, back, and bottom.

Below are three videos illustrating the correct meditation posture(s) for different types of meditation techniques.

    I am scheduled to attend a Vipassana Retreat in Feb 2010. The majority of each day is dedicated to sitting. Although they allow chairs, I have a personal goal to sit without back support.

    I have been experimenting but do not yet feel comfortable that I am sitting properly in relation to my back. It is usually the middle of my back that begins to ache after a short period.

    Do you have any suggestions as to what exercises I can do that will help strengthen my back muscles, specifically for the purpose of sitting? I *think* I am sitting correctly (back straight as described in the above videos) and it is just a matter of having extremely weak back muscles.

    I appreciate anything you can suggest!

    Namaste,
    Karen

  • Zarah,

    You are most welcome! Believe me, you are not the only one that has this problem. I actually posted these videos in response to questions about posture! Many people have gotten stuck on the “right” way of sitting for meditation and have lost track of what’s actually important… practicing meditation!

    I’m glad you benefited from these videos and look forward to hearing from you at the Meditation Garden Community on Facebook!

    These are really great videos. Thank you so much for posting them on this page. I’ve been trying to learn how to do meditation but always seem to get stuck in the posture. Seeing that there’s several ways that I can sit and meditate makes me feel more comfortable and willing to actually focus on the meditating aspect of meditation. It’s amazing how many things we can use to procrastinate huh? Thanks again.
