What Exactly are Binaural Beats?

Binaural Beats and Guided Meditations
Binaural beats recordings play a stereo recording of tones through a pair of headphones. The track is set up so that one pitch is played into one side of the headphones and a very slightly higher pitch is played on the other side.
The result is that your brain perceives a third subsonic tone that is created by the difference between the two that you are hearing. This tone is perceived by the brain, although it is not heard by the ear (subsonic means below the range of human hearing).
When done properly, this will “entrain” your brain to operate at that frequency.
In our case here, we are replicating Alpha and Theta states (from 4-12Hz), which are typically achieved during deep states of meditation.
There’s a significant amount of science behind the concept. If you want to find out how you can mix in these binaural beats with Free guided meditations click here.
If you have tried meditating using binaural beats in the past, you may have found it to be distracting or even unpleasant. This is because the two sounds that are used are pure sine waves. These types of tones do not tend to occur in frequently in nature and are very unmusical. In other words, it’s not something you would pay to go to a concert and hear!
We can mask the binaural beat into the background somewhat, using music or additional sounds. One well researched way of doing this is using a sound called pink noise. Pink noise sounds like the sound someone makes when they are telling you to be quiet (ssshh!) or similar to the sound when a TV channel goes out and all you see is the black and white snow (this is actually white noise, but we’re trying to keep this simple).
Interesting and Unknown Fact- This type of “noise” is commonly used in office buildings to keep conversations private by feeding this sound through the building. You don’t even notice it’s there, because through evolution our brains have learned that these sounds don’t represent either danger or opportunity, so we just tune them out. This is why most people don’t even notice that their air conditioner is running until it shuts off and you may notice the sudden quiet.
By the way, if you don’t find the sine wave tones distracting or annoying, then please by all means, listen to them without using any masking whatsoever. There is absolutely nothing wrong with doing this. It’s just a matter of personal preference.

Also, in regards to the binaural beats I personally use, so far I’ve found that the products on www.binauralbeatsmp3.com and www.meditation-downloads.com are the best. The www.binauralbeatsmp3.com page sells a package that includes binaural beats for different issues (anxiety, sleeping, energy, relaxation, etc) and www.meditation-downloads.com even lets you download a free sample. I have and still use the binaural beats from both of these sites and recommend them.
