My Meditation Experiences so Far

Sonia Gallagher

I’ve been meditating for grounding and doing a video program on relaxation for the past few days, and woke up with the idea that I should publish posts on the site about my meditation experiences so far. This way I am able to share it with others that have been meditating for years and with those that are curious about meditation or are beginners to it. I will also hopefully get answers to my questions and concerns from those that have been teaching and meditating for longer.

As most of you already know, I went a spiritual retreat a little less than a month ago and had a Kundalini Energy awakening. This awakening was not anything I was looking for even thought was possible for me. Every time I’ve read of a Kundalini energy awakening, I’ve always pictured a very zen-like person who has been meditating for years and perhaps even a monk in a monastery. Little did I know it would happen to me. I mean, I’ve only been meditating for a few months so I was extremely surprised at the experience.

Needless to say, my life has completely changed. I’ve completely changed. Since the Kundalini experience, I am just way calmer than I normally was. I mean a calmness that is a sort of contentment…even in the face of stress! This is a wonderful feeling and I am certainly not complaining. Still, a few things have changed which have caused me to notice them and I don’t really think I like them.

Things were great when I got back from the meditation retreat/spiritual meeting. However, that night I felt the Kundalini energy again when I was going to sleep! I was literally feeling muscle spasms in my stomach to the point that my husband asked me if I was doing crunches in bed.
After that day, my meditation experiences have completely changed. Whenever I meditate sitting down with the palms of my hands facing up, I feel trickles of energy coming in through my hands all the way into my stomach. Then the muscle spasm feelings start up again. Could this be because I am scared and am resisting the energy flowing through me?

Then, when I meditate while laying down, I get an overwhelming feeling of lightness. It feels like I am above my body and I can literally feel it when I start getting out of it. It all starts with tingling in my hands and arms and then losing feeling of my body completely. I’ve read about this and spoken to a few people about it. They tell me it’s great that I am reaching another level of consciousness. Though it’s great, it’s also affecting me in other ways that are not comfortable…
I’ve always been a very deep sleeper. Before the Kundalini experience, I used to remember and be able to narrate with impeccable detail all of my dreams. Now, forget about it. I am lucky if I remember bits and pieces of them. Not only do I not remember my dreams (even though I know that I’m having more dreams now than before), I’m also exhausted when I wake up!

Last night, I apparently even woke up my husband while I was sleeping because I was tossing and turning for hours!
Have you had an experience like this? What does it mean? Do I need to meditation for more grounding of the energy that I awoke or woke up to during the Kundalini experience?

If you are new to meditation and would like to really learn how to do meditation and more about relaxation techniques, you should check out this video program. It’s a very powerful tool for anyone leading a life filled with more stress than they deserve.. which is too many of us!

  • Thank you Thom. That is exactly why I created this site; to give a safe space to people to learn from and be able to share about their meditation and spiritual experiences. I hope to see you at the Meditation Garden Community on Facebook or on Twitter so you can stay up to date with every new thing I post on this site!

Thank you very much for your honest description of your spiritual experience. So many of us have experienced moments of being at one with the divine but either don’t understand them and just end up ignoring them or are afraid of continuing to feel that experience.

I think its great that you share with everyone your experience and I hope that it serves to inspire others to also talk about their experiences and be more open about them.

We live in such hard financial and emotional times rightnow that a lot of us have not put spirituality in the place that it deserves in their life (myself included).

Thank you very much for your openness and honesty.

  • Hi Sandy,
Thank you so very much for sharing your experience with meditation as a comment so that our readers can also partake with suggestions and comments of their own. I can tell you that I definitely agree with you about feeling more relaxed and being more in the moment after regular meditation. In regards to the muscle spasms on your back and the back of your thigh, it sounds like its energy moving through your body. Have you ever tried chakra tuning meditation or Reiki? These two methods would help you greatly. Make sure to check out The Big List of Guided Meditations which includes a few videos on guided chakra meditations. I definitely recommend these for you. If you feel any pain or the “stabs” continue, you may want to visit a physician to make sure you don’t have a blood circulation or muscle spasm problem.

I also tend to feel a sense of weightlessness when I meditate deeply and am completely relaxed. This is the beginning of astral projection. You may want to take a look at http://www.meditation-downloads.com, they’ve got binaural beats and guided meditations that are focused on astral projection and other related topics. I use them myself. The sense of weightlessness can be scary, especially at first because you fear that you are literally going to float away! Believe me, you won’t. I actually discussed this subject with one of our podcast guests and she suggested I visualize a yellow balloon on my toes so that I know how to get back to my body in the case that I do astral project. It may sound silly at first but it actually worked. After knowing that and visualizing the balloon, I am now not afraid of astral projection, weightlessness, or going into deeper meditation states. It’s incredible what the mind is capable of doing and visualization and guided meditations can help you very much. I hope this helps you and I look forward to hearing more from you!

I have just learned Transcendental Meditation and have been practicing twice a day now for a week and a half. I have to say so far, the results are amazing. I chose to learn it to reduce the stress in my life. I have a little boy with a few disabilities, resulting in behavioral issues; my life is very stressful. Since I began to meditate I have notice how I “feel” less stressed out and am better to deal with my son’s issues. Not only that, but have now have more energy and am a lot more positive, without much effort on my part. All of these great benefits in less then two weeks is great and I definitely do not want to take it for granted. The problem is though, that within the last few days, I have been experiencing some things and am not sure what to make of it. I know that small muscle spasms, or twitching is normal, but what about when my whole arm decides to randomly spasms? Another thing I have experienced (and only when I meditate)is that the lower end, right side of my back, or the back of my right thigh either feels like it is burning or sometimes being stabbed. This one really confusses me, and like I said, it is only when I meditate. One last thing, when I am meditating and I am begining to “let go” or really “get into it” (whatever you want to call it)sometimes I actually feel like I am floating. I am not really, I am grounded, it just feels like my whole body is starting to float. Its crazy, it feels great but it is also really confussing. Any help, thoughts, suggestion, clarification anyone has would be appreciated.

    Sandy D.
