What is Transcendental Meditation (aka Transidental Meditation)?

Transidental Meditation

Transidental Meditation

Transcendental meditation (TM) is a meditation technique commonly referred to as Transidental Meditation. This type of meditation technique differs from most others in that the other forms of meditation rely heavily on concentration and contemplation. Transidental Meditation focuses your concentration on the repeating of a specific mantra provided to you when you study TM. In reality, Transidental Meditation does not involve any effort or concentration. In this way, it is a commonly used relaxation technique.

Transcendental Meditation or TM is a form of meditation developed in 1955 by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, a disciple of Brahmananda Saraswati. TM is a simple technique which gives a unique quality of rest to mind and body. This type of meditation technique aids relaxation, relieves stress, and provides physical and mental energy. Transidental Meditation is taught by over 30,000 TM teachers around the world today.

Though many people are great supporters of TM, including the Beatles, Russell Simmons, and Film Producer David Lynch. Members of the Clergy hav varying views when assessing the compatibility of the Transcendental Meditation technique with their religions. Still, today, TM is enjoyed by people from all walks of life: doctors, university professors, homemakers, sports teams, company directors, teachers, students, retired people, parents, etc.

In the United States the adult fee to learn Transcendental Meditation is approximately $2,000 dollars. Though this price is a bit high, many people pay it for the benefits they can receive from learning TM.  They find it to be a very good relaxation technique. However, there are other techniques that are just as good in terms of reducing stress in daily life.

Some of the most prominent benefits include: Reduced insomnia, anxiety, and depression Increased intelligence (IQ) and academic performance, improved memory Reduced high blood pressure, improved overall cardiovascular health Increased happiness, creativity, and greater self-actualization.

An alternative to Transidental meditation is the Primordial Sound meditation®, a meditation technique created by Deepak Chopra. This technique has been described as being similar to TM and has been considered to be as effective.

According to Transcendental Meditation theory there are eight states of consciousness, of which the first three are familiar to non-TM meditators: waking state of consciousness dreaming state of consciousness (REM) dreamless sleeping state of consciousness Transcendental state of Consciousness (TC) Cosmic Consciousness (CC) God Consciousness (GC) Unity Consciousness (UC) Brahman Consciousness (BC).

As the body becomes deeply relaxed, the mind transcends all mental activity to experience the simplest form of awareness, Transcendental Consciousness, where consciousness is open to itself. Ultimately, the experience of Transcendental Consciousness develops the individual’s latent creative potential while dissolving accumulated stress and fatigue through the deep rest gained during the practice. Practicing Transidental Meditation is like taking a vacation twice a day.

There are many other meditation techniques and relaxation techniques that help you reduce your daily stress for a much lower price.  You should consider the time you have to invest in meditating, your level of commitment to this practice when determining the most comfortable relaxation and meditation technique.

Do you practice this type of meditation technique? What has been your experience? Do you prefer it to other types of meditation techniques?

  • Anita,

Meditation would be helpful both for you and your son. It would help make you a more present parent to him and would help him to be able to focus his attention better. The type of meditation technique that is best for you and for him will be the type that you each feel most comfortable with… this way there will be consistency in the practice.

You might want to check out an online meditation class to learn about meditation techniques and spirituality in more detail and how this can help you and your son. An online class would be convenient for you since you’d be able to do it from home without having to leave your son.

Let me know how it works out. I look forward to hearing from you and wish you a lot of love and light in your and your son’s life.

I have been hearing a lot of this type of meditation technique and have actualy considered using it for my son’s benefit. He suffers from ADD (severe).

Thank you so much for explaining it such clear terms. I am curious to find out more about meditation in general. Do you know of any specific type of meditation technique that would be most helpful to him?
